I was reading “A Christmas Story “ by Charles Dickens. I noticed that Scrooge was so stingy that he wouldn’t buy coal to warm his house or his place is business.
It made me think about the Santa Clause myth about leaving coal for the naughty kids. I decided that Santa was pretty gracious. He choose to kept the family warm.
When I was a teacher, I had a student who used to go to my reading corner which was equipped with big pillows, and he would fall sound asleep. I let him sleep and when class was over I asked him why he was so tired. He shared with me that he couldn’t sleep at night because his family couldn’t pay their gas bill and their house was really cold at night. He asked if I could give him extra homework because he was good at doing homework through the night when he couldn’t sleep. Needless to say, he slept through most of my classes and I made handout just for him explaining the lesson he missed and he slept through most of my classes during the winter months.
We just never know what other people are going through. I think that Santa giving coal may have been exactly what the family needed. That thought warmed my heart. I am pretty sure that my former student would have loved a couple lumps of coal to warm his house.
